Jesus in Islam
Jesus (peace be upon him) has a special status in Islam.
He is Prophet and Messenger, Allah sent him to guide the children of Israel with the Gospel that Allah revealed down to him.
He is one of the 5 Greatest Messengers in Islam. He is the Messiah, born of a virgin and he will descend at the end of time.
1 - Mary is the chosen
“ And ˹remember˺ when the angels said, “O Mary! Surely Allah has selected you, purified you, and chosen you over all women of the world. O Mary! Be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself ˹in prayer˺ and bow along with those who bow down.”
2 - Jesus's birth was miraculous (Born of a virgin)
Miraculous birth indicates God's power and ability to create anything He wills, transcends natural laws, and to serve as a sign or miracle for humanity.
“ She wondered, “How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me, nor am I unchaste? He replied, “So will it be! Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me. And so will We make him a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us.’ It is a matter ˹already˺ decreed”
There are 4 images of Miraculous birth that Allah created:
1 - He created Adam without Father or Mother
2 - He created Eve from Adam's rib
3 - He created Jesus without Father
4 - He created the other humans with Father and Mother
“ Indeed, the example of Jesus in the sight of Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust, then said to him, “Be!” And he was! ”
“ It is not for Allah to take a son! Glory be to Him. When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, “Be!” And it is! ”
3 - Jesus is the Messiah in Islam
In Islam, Messiah means "the anointed one" for a specific mission.
Jesus was anointed as a messenger to guide the Children of Israel and in his second mission is to defeat the Antichrist (the false Messiah) in his second coming and after he complete his mission, he will pass away.
“ The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. ˹Many˺ messengers had ˹come and˺ gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food. See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹from the truth˺!”
4 - Jesus is a Messenger and Prophet
Jesus preached the 'same' Message all other Prophets before him preached which is to worship God alone and don't associate partners with him (The Message of Islam).
“ ˹Jesus also declared,˺ Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him ˹alone˺. This is the Straight Path”
“ It is not appropriate for someone (human) who Allah has blessed with the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to say to people, “Worship me instead of Allah.” Rather, he would say, “Be devoted to the worship of your Lord ˹alone˺—by virtue of what you read in the Scripture and what you teach.”
5 - Jesus did Miracles “By Allah’s power and permission”
Similar to other prophets, Jesus performed miracles as a sign to convince skeptics of his truthfulness, not to demonstrate his divinity.
- Talking as a Baby
Jesus, still a newborn, defended his mother when Jews spoke bad of her and accuse her of adultery. (Quran 19:27-33)
- A heavenly food table (Quran 5: 112-115)
- Breathing life into clay bird by God’s permission, Curing the blind and the leper, Giving life to the dead by God’s permission, Knowing some hidden things.
“ and ˹make him˺ a messenger to the Children of Israel ˹to proclaim,˺ ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will make for you a bird from clay, breathe into it, and it will become a ˹real˺ bird—by Allah’s Will. I will heal the blind and the leper and raise the dead to life—by Allah’s Will. And I will prophesize what you eat and store in your houses. Surely in this is a sign for you if you ˹truly˺ believe.”
There are two types of creation. When you create something from nothing and when you use 'something' to create another thing. God can create something from absolute nothing.
Jesus used the 'clay' to shape it like a bird and it became a real bird by Allah's will.
Moses threw the staff down and it became a real snake by Allah's will (Quran 20:19–21)
6 - The Conversation Between Allah and Jesus on the Day of Judgment
“ And ˹on Judgment Day˺ Allah will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you ever ask the people to worship you and your mother as gods besides Allah?” He will answer, “Glory be to You! How could I ever say what I had no right to say? If I had said such a thing, you would have certainly known it. You know what is ˹hidden˺ within me, but I do not know what is within You. Indeed, You ˹alone˺ are the Knower of all unseen. I never told them anything except what You ordered me to say: “Worship Allah—my Lord and your Lord!” And I was witness over them as long as I remained among them. But when You took me, You were the Witness over them—and You are a Witness over all things. If You punish them, they belong to You after all. But if You forgive them, You are surely the Almighty, All-Wise.”
